Thinking of improving your marketing? Now that another year has past and the holiday season is over once again, here’s our New Year Marketing Checklist to help you improve this year’s marketing plan.

  1. Clearly define your marketing goals and objectives. State what you want to achieve in the short-term and long-term using the SMART method (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-Focused and Timely).
  1. Build and track your marketing budget. Know what you’re spending and calculate return on investment.  Even postage costs to mail flyers are part of your marketing budget.
  1. Learn from failures and build on successes. Analyze what did and didn’t work.  Even small changes turn failures into successes.  Gather client feedback to know what they respond to and why.
  1. Plan to measure; measure to plan. Create a marketing calendar to cross-reference initiatives.  Know when you need to get what done to help reach milestones more effectively!
  1. Follow up with leads and build your client list. Have you set aside any referrals?  Update your CRM database.  Know who you target, how to approach them, and what resources you need.
  1. Update your marketing collateral. Are images and photographs current?  Does it all have your current and correct contact information?  Consider new pieces.
  1. Make sure your website is optimized for search engines and up-to-date. Do you use important keywords?  Is any content dated?  Archive older blog articles.  Redesign if necessary.
  1. Create an editorial calendar. Keep an ongoing list of ideas and topics including promotions for your blog and social media.  Timing is critical so add planned yet flexible dates.
  1. Invest in your marketing knowledge. A little training goes a long way.  Take a course, join a chat, attend a conference, or speak with an expert to learn something new or build on what you know.
  1. Build your marketing plan for next year. Evaluate what you achieve each month to start planning for next year by December.  Break your plan into quarters to keep your short-term goals on track.

Doing something you have always done is convenient, but may cost more than something new.  If your operations, resources or target market change then your marketing strategy should too.  Put your marketing plan in motion today to focus more on what you do best.
